As the sun rose, and Goliath and his clan turned to stone, Elisa
sighed. "Now to start another dull day."
Elisa looked down from the tower which Goliath slept to where the
rest of the clan perched. She saw Saber, the newest member of the clan,
posed in between his parents, Angela and Brooklyn. He was fifteen years old,
a teenager. Hudson has been teaching Saber how to fight with his sword and
shield, which he got from Xanatos and Fox as a birthday gift. "He's getting
very good at it too, "Elisa thought aloud.
"Who's getting good at what, Miss Maza?" someone said.
Elisa turned around to see Alexander walking up the stairs. "Saber
with the saber," Elisa joked.
The handsome boy smiled and said, "Ha, Ha, very funny Elisa."
Elisa laughed and said, "So you're turning the big one-six tomorrow, huh?"
"Yeah, I can't wait! Saber said he and Hudson would teach me how to fight
with a sword!"
Elisa and Alex turned and walked downstairs together. "So where are
you going?"
"I'm going to visit Derek. I promised him I'd come today," Elisa replied.
"Would you like to come?"
As they reached the elevator and Elisa pushed the down button, Fox
walked up. "Hey, mom, I'm going with Elisa to see Talon. If I have to, I'll
just call Owen to come pick me up, okay?"
"Alright, have fun. Do you have your cellular?" Fox asked.
"Yeah! Bye Mom!" Alex said as the elevator doors closed.
As Elisa and Alex got to her car, she tossed her keys to him and
said, "Here."
Alex looked up, surprised. "Really? Are you sure, I just got my
license Monday."
"Yeah, I'm sure. But just remember, I am a cop. So don't speed!" Elisa said
as she ruffled Alex's hair.
They drove over to the secluded manhole closest to Talon's and his
friend's hideout in the sewer and parked the car. Elisa made sure the coast
was clear before they decended into the 'Labyrinth'. "Ah Elisa! We've been
expecting you!" Talon said as he embraced his sister.
"Hey, Derek. I brought Alex. Do you mind?" Elisa said as she
hugged him back.
"No, of course not. He's always welcome in our home, "he said as he shook the
boy's hand.
Derek led them to the 'main' room and pulled up two more chairs for
their guests. They both sat down as Maggie gave them glasses of water. "So
how are you feeling?" Elisa asked.
Maggie placed her hand on her round stomach and said, "Alright I
guess. The baby should be due any day now."
"Boy, I bet you're nervous Talon, "Alex said.
"Are you kidding? I haven't had a decent night's sleep all this week!"
Everyone laughed at his comment. They talked the entire day. When
Elisa and Alex crawled out of the sewers, it was almost sunset. "I think
I'll stay, Elisa. I'll call my parent's and tell them, okay?" Alex said.
"Alright. Have fun!"
When she got back to the castle, the gargoyles were already awake.
"Hello, Elisa, "Goliath said, looking up from his book, 'The Hunchback of
Notre Dame'.
Elisa walked over and kissed Goliath on the cheek, "Hi, Goliath."
They looked lovingly at each other until Brooklyn cleared his throat.
"Don't try to hide it you two. We all know you love each other, we're not
stupid. We also know you want to get married, if it were legal."
Elisa sighed. "You're right. We do love each other. I just wish we
could get married."
Goliath nodded his head in agreement. Suddenly, a ring of fire
appeared behind Elisa. "My love, look out!" Goliath shouted as he pulled her
to safety.
Goliath took a second look at the fire. "It can't be, "he growled.
A creature stepped through the fire into the room they were in, and
the ring disappeared. The clan looked in awe at the creature before them.
"It looks like one of the Labyrinth clan members, except it's a wolf!"
Brooklyn said. "And he has the Phoenix Gate!"
Goliath went up to see who the visitor was when it suddenly drew a
sword. "Keep back!" it shouted.
"It's alright my friend! We won't hurt you!" Giliath told the frightened
wolf. "What's your name?"
"Gunner, and also, my parents taught me to never trust anyone until they
prove themselves worthy!"
With that, the wolf kicked Goliath's legs out from under him and
put his sword on Goliath's throat. "Goliath!" Elisa shrieked.
Just then, Saber jumped out and knocked Gunner's sword away with
his own, so that Goliath could roll to safety. "Leave him alone!" Saber
shouted.
"Saber get away from there!" Angela cried. "Please!"
"So you want a fight, eh?" Gunner snarled.
"No, but if I have to fight to protect my clan, yes!" Saber said.
Saber swung his sword at Gunner, who blocked. Suddenly, Saber pulled
the move Hudson taught him, and knocked Gunner's sword out of his hands.
"Go ahead. Kill me," Gunner growled, lifting his head to expose his neck.
"I don't want to kill you, we would like to talk to you," Saber said, handing
Gunner his sword.
"Why did you spare my life?" Gunner said, confused.
"Gargoyles never kill unless it's positively necessary."
Gunner, after a few moments checking everyone out, introduced
himself, also apoligizing to Goliath. "Gunner, where did you get that?"
Goliath asked, pointing to the Phoenix Gate.
"You mean the Phoenix Gate? Well, actually, it seemed to appear out of
nowhere. My parents had a book and it had the spell for it."
"Why are you here?" Brooklyn asked.
"Our king is missing. I'm on a quest to find him."
"King who?" Saber asked.
"Why, King Derek of course!" Gunner said, suprised. "Haven't you heard of
him?"
"Well, the only Derek I know of is my brother, "Elisa said.
Gunner shot up out of his seat and shouted, "You must take me to him
at once!"
----------------------------------------------------
Goliath and his clan took Gunner to see Derek. "I really doubt that
this is him, though, "Elisa said as they walked through the sewers.
Finally they got to Derek's home. "Derek! It's me, Elisa!"
"Elisa? What are you doing here?" Derek said as he walked into the room.
Gunner peered around Goliath and gasped. He pushed his way through
to Derek and dropped to one knee in a repective bow. "My King! I finally
found you!" Gunner said.
"What the... Who is this?" Derek shouted.
"It's me, Gunner. Don't you remember me? I saved you from Dagrionis!"
"Who the hell are you talking about? I'm not a king, I have never seen you
before in my life! I've never been attacked by Dagrionis, whoever he is!"
Derek shouted.
"But it's only been four years since then! Why don't you remember?"
"Listen, kid. I have never seen you before in my life!"
"You knighted me!"
Goliath thought about the Phoenix Gate and said, "Wait. Gunner, just
exactly when did you get knighted?"
"March 14, 2038. Why?" Gunner said.
Gunner looked at their reactions and added, "What's the matter?"
"This year is 1997, "Saber told him.
"I traveled back 45 years!" Gunner shouted.
Everyone was arguing when Goliath shouted, "Quiet! Gunner, give me
the Phoenix Gate. We'll find out once and for all."
Gunner gave him the Gate and Goliath spoke the incantation,
"Deflagrate muri tempi et intervallia!"
The Gate glowed and picked them up. Suddenly, they found themselves
in beautiful countryside, surrounded by green mountains, large pine trees,
and a blue river. "Where are we?" Saber asked.
"My home!" Gunner shouted, running off. "C'mon!"
Everyone ran in pursuit, Goliath carrying Elisa so she wouldn't get
behind. Gunner suddenly stopped, so sudden that Saber almost ran into him.
"What is it? Where are we?" Saber asked.
"We're in New York of course! But, this isn't the right year. You see him?"
Gunner said, pointing to a child, who was busy practicing a move with his
sword.
"Yeah, so?"
"That's me, I'm only twelve years old!" Gunner said. "Wait! I know this!"
Gunner ran to a tree closer to the child, the others following. "If
I remember correctly, a knight on a horse will come galloping out of the
forest right... now, "Gunner said.
Sure enough, the knight came galloping out of the woods. He halted
his horse in front of the young wolf. "Who is that? "Elisa asked.
The only reply from Gunner was, "Just wait."
The knight slowly took off his helmet, and dismounted his white
stallion. Everyone gasped when they saw who it was. "It's you, Derek!" Elisa
whispered.
Derek was speechless.
----------------------------------------------------
They came back to their time, at the castle, and instantly began
asking Gunner a lot of questions at the same. "Woah! Woah! One at a time!"
he shouted, covering his ears.
"Who was the knight?"
"King Derek!"
"But it wasn't me! His eyes were blue, mine are yellow!" Derek shouted. "Also
he looked too young."
"You're not that old, "Saber said.
"Yeah, but that was the year 2038," Derek said. "I'd be sixty years old!"
"He's right," Angela said. "That man did not look sixty, that's for sure."
Suddenly Claw burst into the room. "Claw! What are you doing here?"
Derek asked, surprised.
Claw made gestures for Derek to leave, but Derek shook his head and
said, "No, I need to stay. We're trying to clear something up."
Claw grabbed Derek's shoulder and surprised everyone by saying,
"Talon! It's Maggie!"
"Maggie!" Derek shouted. "She's having the baby!"
He and Claw rushed out of the room, with Gunner, Elisa, and the
gargoyles following. When they got in the sewers, Maggie's cries of pain
could be heard. They ran into the main room, finding Maggie in one of the
rooms, screaming in pain. Alex was beside her, trying to comfort her. When he
saw them, he walked up and said, "We were talking when she went into labor.
So I told Claw to get you."
Derek thanked Alex and ran to Maggie's side. "Elisa! Please help us!"
Derek shouted over the screams.
Elisa rushed into the room and shut the door. The others sat down to
wait for some news.
After eighteen hours of labor, Maggie gave birth. Elisa opened the
door to let everyone in. They walked in to find Maggie holding a small bundle
with Derek, his arm around her, smiled and said, "Hey, guys, come and meet my
son, Derek Jr.."
They all gathered around to see the small cub sleeping in his
mother's arms. He yawned and blinked his eyes. He looked at all the people
staring at him, yawned again, then fell back asleep.
Brooklyn leaned over to Goliath and whispered, "Goliath, his eyes are blue."
---------------------------------------------------
Later, when Maggie and their cub were resting, the clan was talking
to Talon.
"Talon, don't you see? Your son is, or will be, 'King Derek', not you!"
"But that's impossible! How can my son be the king? What would happen to make
him king?" Talon argued.
"That's one question our new friend can answer, "Goliath said, turning to
Gunner. "Gunner could you tell us anything you know about King Derek?"
"Sure, I guess. Let's see, when New York was given to the mutates..."
"Wait! How many mutates were there? How'd they get their own state?" Broadway
interrupted.
"I don't know, I guess more were made and then those that existed bred, and
so on. Soon there were so many, the US gave us the state as long as we stay
out of the other states, because of fear of 'looking bad' to the other
countries, "Gunner said. "May I continue?"
Broadway nodded sheepishly. "So we formed our own government, a
monarchy. Um, I think they chose Derek because he was the original leader,
and they new he was the best choice. When he got too old, he turned the
kingdom over to his son. Then this crazy hyena named Dagrionis thought he'd
be better ruling and tried to kill him. Remember when we went back? Well,
if we stayed longer, we'd have seen the attack. Well, I ended up saving him,
and he knighted me. Then, suddenly he disappeared a year later. I've been
searching for him for three years. And now, "Gunner chuckled, pointing
through the window at the infant. "I found him."
They were silent for what seemed like hours before Brooklyn said,
"Well, here's an idea. We can go back before the first attack, and get
Dagrionis before he gets to Junior there."
"Good idea, Brooklyn, "Goliath said. "Let's not waste anymore time. Elisa
and Angela, stay here and watch over Maggie. Broadway, Lexington, Hudson,
and Bronx, go back and protect our home."
They nodded and watched Goliath speak the incantation.
-------------------------------------------------
Soon the crew found themselves back in the country. "Okay, let's go!"
Saber said, drawing his sword and readying his sheild.
"Follow me!" Gunner said.
They ran through the woods, until they came to a clearing. Everyone
hid behind something and looked to see what was going on. They saw a mutate
hyena standing in the clearing talking to a group of miscellaneous animals.
"When do we attack?" Saber whispered.
"On my word. NOW!!" Gunner screamed.
Everyone ran out, swords drawn and eyes glowing in rage. "What
the..?" Dagrionis said, turning. "I have no idea who these things are, but if
it's a fight they want they got it! Attack!"
They clashed, swords flashing and sparks flying from shields when
the swords make contact. Gunner stabbed an alligator, smiled as he watched
it fall, then shouted, "Long live King Derek!"
Suddenly, an arrow came flying through the air and hit Gunner in the
arm. He grabbed his arm and screamed in pain. "Gunner!" Saber shouted.
Gunner pulled the arrow out of his arm and shouted, "I'm alright!
Keep fighting!"
Gunner ran up, slicing anyone who got in the way, to get to
Dagrionis. "Dagrionis! Prepare to die!"
"I don't know who you are, "Dag growled. "But you should know what you're
dealing with."
"I've beaten you before, I'll beat you again."
"Whatever you say, shorty, "Dag said. "Well, go ahead, attack. If you're
brave enough."
Gunner growled, then attacked. He tried to stab Dagrionis, but he
dodged and Dag slashed his already wounded arm. Gunner screamed, but more so
in rage than in pain. Gunner roared and slashed at Dagrionis, slicing Dag's
leg to the bone. Dagrionis fell to the ground, clutching his leg. Gunner
kicked Dag's sword away and said, "Take a good look, Dagrionis. Your rebels
are dead and soon you will join them!"
"Go ahead! I'd rather die than live under Derek's rule!" Dagrionis growled.
"If you say so," Gunner said, smiling.
Dagrionis' eyes grew wide as he watched Gunner raise his sword above
his chest. "Farewell, Dagrionis,"
Gunner brought the sword down with all his strength into Dag's chest.
Dagrionis gasped, then died. "Now you will never attack King Derek," Gunner
said. "Saber! What's wrong?"
He saw Saber clutching the right side of his face, blood trickling
through his fingers. Brooklyn also saw this, and ran to his son's side. "Son,
what's wrong?"
"Nothing, Dad, I'm fine," Saber said.
Brooklyn caught Saber off guard, grabbed Saber's hand, and pulled it
away. They gasped when they saw him. His face was slashed right over his eye.
"Saber, can you see out of that eye?" Brooklyn said, worried.
Saber blinked and sighed, "No."
Gunner tore off a piece of his shirt and wrapped it around Saber's
face, before they returned to their time. When they got there, Goliath said,
"We were successful, but Saber was injured badly. He's now blind in his right
eye."
Angela gasped and ran to Brooklyn and her son. "Thanks everyone. I
don't know how I can repay you. Especially you, Saber, "Gunner said. "Wait!
I know! But we have to travel forward in time one more time."
They did as he said, and found themselves in a huge house. "Gunner!
you're home!" someone shouted behind them.
They found Gunner walking up to his parents, who looked very happy.
"You did it son. King Derek is alive and well."
"Mom, Dad, I wouldn't have been abble to do this without them," Gunner said,
gesturing towards Brooklyn, Goliath, Saber, and Talon. "I was wondering if
you could give them a gift each."
"I guess that could be arranged," Gunner's father said. "You see, I'm a, well,
a sorcerer. I grant gifts for people who deserve them. But there are rules
of course. I can't heal anybody, I can't make people fall in love, and I
can't grant big things like world peace. So name your wishes and they will
come true tomarrow."
"You poor thing!" Gunner's mother said, walking up to Saber. "Here. We have a
small Emergency room, so we have our supplies for this type of injury and
worse."
She handed Saber an eye patch. He took off the blood-stained
'bandage'and replaced it with the patch. "Thanks," He said.
"Now,"Gunner's father said. "Make your wishes."
They returned to their time after making their wishes and saying
good-byes to wait for the next day.
---------------------------------------------------
It was close to sunrise when the clan returned to the castle. Goliath
prayed with all his heart that his wish would work as he stood on his tower.
"So I heard about this wish thing, "Elisa said, walking up to Goliath. "What
did you wish for?"
Goliath looked at the rising sun and said, "You'll see."
As the sun came up and hit the gargoyles, they turned to stone. All,
that is, except for Goliath. "Goliath?" Elisa said, looking at him.
Suddenly, Goliath's body started to shine brightly. Elisa sheilded
her eyes from the light. Then the light was gone. She looked up and found
Goliath standing there. Elisa gasped. "Goliath, you're a human!"
"Yes," He smiled. "Half my wish has worked."
Elisa ran up to Goliath and they embraced each other. "Half your
wish? What's the other half?" Elisa asked, looking into Goliath's dark brown
eyes.
"Well, when the sun sets, I'll turn back into a gargoyle, and, I made this
clear when I wished for it, if you want to do this for the rest of your life,
you can turn into a gargoyle too. If you want to that is. If you don't you
won't. But, remember, this is for the rest of your life. You just can't
quit." Goliath said.
"Shhh, "Elisa whispered. "I accept your offer."
They kissed, then Goliath bent down on one knee and said, "Elisa,
will you marry me?"
Elisa gasped and hugged Goliath as she said, "Yes!"
Still holding hands, they looked out at the city, thinking of what
the future held for them and the clan.
